| Todd Newman began his martial arts training at the age of 9 studying the art of Aikido. It was not long before he realized his affinity for the grappling arts, and joined the town wrestling team at age 10. Todd wrestled throughout elementary and high school, and became the captain of his high school wrestling team. In the years following, his athletic focus shifted primarily to strength training and fitness.
In 2004, after a long search to find the best grappling arts opportunity for his two young sons, Todd discovered Sensei Edson Carvalho. He felt that the unique combination of Judo and BJJ along with Sensei Carvalho's unmatched teaching abilities would be an unparalleled path for his children to follow. Within a month of signing up his sons, Todd ended a two decades long sabbatical from the mat, and joined them as a member of Team Carvalho. Todd received his purple belt from Sensei Carvalho in December 2008 after almost 4 years of training.
Todd is a practicing Physician Assistant in New Jersey and New York. He has a bachelor's degree in Physical Education, and a graduate degree in Exercise Physiology. He has been certified as an Exercise Specialist by the American College of Sports Medicine, has attended the Rutgers Youth Coaching Clinic and holds certifications in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Todd coaches youth street hockey and baseball in addition to helping out with the Team Carvalho Kids program. He feels that maintaining a fun and safe training environment is the most important aspect of promoting the proper development of young athletes.
